PACKAGING SHEETS FOR PROCESSED ORGANIC PRODUCTS – PRACTICAL GUIDE
2026

Although organic products are not always subject to specific regulatory requirements related to their packaging, the organic industry wants to set the example and meet consumers’ growing expectations in terms of environmental protection. However, the choice of the optimum packaging is a complex challenge that must reconcile food safety with functionality while reducing environmental impact.
This tool — designed to help food industry SMEs, teachers, and students in a process of continuous improvement — gives reliable indicators to help them make informed packaging choices.
It includes:
Information sheets on specific themes: A synthesis of the 3R strategy (reduction-reuse-recycling of packaging), the key points of eco-design, and a summary of consumer expectations.
Sheets on market trends: Explanations on current trends, which are sometimes unclear or incorrectly interpreted, such as bio-sourced, biodegradable, compostable, or reusable materials.
Sheets on materials: An analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various materials: plastics, bioplastics, glass, paper/cardboard, metals, etc.
A concrete case study: A comparative life cycle analysis (LCA) of two tray solutions for the meat sector, in order to illustrate the search for more eco-friendly alternatives.
